Florida Tarpon
Fishing
Florida Tarpon Fishing is noted world wide as some of the best fishing available. You can bait fish or spin fish
but the ultimate test is with the fly rods. You can fish the inlets for smaller tarpon up to a hundred pounds or
hire a guide with a skiff or go on a charter boat and go after a record. Whether you are fishing the surf, the
flats, or going after the big ones make sure you can handle it physically. A large Tarpon will drain every ounce of
strength you have! As always we recommend catch and release. Get a good photo and have a fiberglass mount of the
fish made. These fish are too valuable to only catch once.

There are many Tarpon tournaments but such methods are not for everyone. Some offer a great amount of prize
money and the competition is fierce.
There are Special Regulations for Tarpon Fishing in Boca Grande. This is a two page PDF booklet for
download.

Tarpon Fishing Equipment
We recommend medium to heavy spinning and bait casting equipment. We do not recommend ultra
light because most fisherman will take too long to land the fish and stress the fish to exhaustion. Spinning
or bait casting lines should be of at least 15 to 20 pound strength with a heavier leader depending upon the size
of Tarpon you are fishing for. Fly fishing equipment should consist of rods of around 9 feet casting size 9 to
13 weight lines with at least 300 yards of 30 pound backing. The reel should be smooth with an exceptionally
strong adjustable drag.
