For most fly fishing in saltwater rods of 8.6 feet to 9.0 feet will do the trick. They should cast lines 7-9 weight. For large fish such as giant Tarpon you probably are better off with 10 to 13 weight system. You will also gain an advantage if you have a padded extent ion butt which you will be able to shove into your gut to gain some leverage with a big fish. This will give your wrist and arm a break stop it from getting tired. Fly reels should be large enough to hold the line with hundreds of yards for backing. You should have a very sophisticated drag system and the reel should saltwater corrosion resistant.

Fly lines come in variety of sizes and colors and tapers but for the most part I prefer weighted forward. For most fishing a weighted forward size 8 (wf-8) will suffice. Taper leaders of 7.6 feet with shock tippets of 15 to 30 pounds depending upon the species you are going after. The shock tippet is usually around 2 feet in length. If going after species with sharp teeth or areas of snagging (mangroves) you'll want a wire tippet.
